about

On Living on Sheepheads, Cross Brothers’ impressive first LP, the 5-piece band from Cleveland deliver a sharp, nuanced album of tight, locked-in performances. Instead of sweeping musical gestures, the record is full of barely controlled tension and shouted mysteries. Three guitars take turns crashing and jangling; hoarse voices hint at stories; meanwhile, bass and drums percolate fiercely underneath. The clever hooks are enhanced by the tasteful inclusion of organs, bells, jilted percussion, and most prominently, meticulous guitar work.

The group is as adept at building up a nervy rumble (“There is Nowhere”) as it is with punchy staccato numbers (“Hard Earned Trap”, “Back From The Dead”). Chiming and dueling guitars, harmonizing vocals, nearly kraut-rock churns & chants all create a compellingly taut batch of tunes. The Crosses’ gift is setting familiar melodies askew. Elusive yet gripping rock songs on the edges of 80’s underground, while occasionally alluding to the power-pop sensibilities of the AM era - Living On Sheepheads is an intriguing balancing act of music full of shadowy insistence and eerie charms.
